Photoshop for Looney Tunes

A READER AT THE PHOTOSHOP 911 FORUMS asked for help simulating the famous Looney Tunes cartoons background we all know and love. I was going to key the instructions right into the forum reply, but realized there is a little more to it than would be appropriate. (Forum thread.)

The techniques are simple. I'll give the most basic steps -- which will work in ANY version of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements since version 3.5 -- then turn you loose, knowing the principles, to create your own masterpiece. I know there are more advanced techniques with layers blending and layer styles -- but the importance of these steps represent what goes on in the background of Photoshop while using the newfangled tools. Once you know the basics, you're free to then utilize the layers styles and actually understand what how the settings work, and what they modify.

Please Help Add Color To White Object!

A reader posted this problem to the Photoshop 911 Emergency room:

 I want to make the white hats in this pic a dark blood red, but EVERY single option I tried just turns them light pink or a light color. How in the world can I make them dark red but still retain their shading?? I tried color replace tool, i tried changing the entire pic red and adding a layer and color iso. I am not an expert so any help is very appreciated. thanks! here is the link to the pic

We've had a lot of unique questions over the years -- from using Photoshop to test the rate of grass growth to using Photoshop to evaluate x-rays. But K.V. from Evansville, IN got our curiosity going with this email:

Dear Photoshop 911,

      I am working on my Criminal Justice Degree, and there are some items that I would like to superimpose to check for identification characteristics for matching ie finger prints, bullet tool markings and so forth. I have CS4 and I am not very familiar with layers, so I was wondering if someone could give me step by step instructions so that I may superimpose on print over another

Photoshop for FingerprintingFirst, let me say that for real criminal identification, the justice industry has developed some sophisticated analysis equipment just for the purpose of fingerprinting. Standards have been set by which law enforcement gathers, records and databases these prints. So Photoshop really doesn't fit into that scenario with any degree of reliability. However for your own investigative purposes, there are some easy ways to utilize Photoshop in the projects you've mentioned above.
